Spiritual center gets opened by Russian Orthodox Church in Africa
(MENAFN) The Russian Orthodox Church has announced plans to establish a spiritual and educational center in Africa under its Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, aimed at expanding religious teaching, media outreach, and pastoral support across the continent.
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow approved the initiative, continuing the church’s growing presence in Africa since the exarchate’s creation in December 2021. The new center, named after the Apostle and Evangelist Mark, will be headed by Archpriest Tigry Khachatryan of the Kursk Diocese.
The center will focus on translating and publishing liturgical, spiritual, and methodological literature into local and international languages, producing radio and film content, organizing creative competitions and seminars, and providing online support to clergy and catechists.
The Patriarchal Exarchate was formed after a split with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria over its support for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Since then, Moscow has expanded its network of parishes and missions in over 30 African countries, including Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, and South Africa, aligning with Russia’s broader diplomatic and economic engagement in the region.
In August, 30 Orthodox priests from 22 African countries visited Russia to meet Patriarch Kirill, attend the first ecclesiastical conference of the African Exarchate, and participate in an RT masterclass on religious media content. The delegation also toured historic sites such as the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the largest male monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church.
